Don't have my copy of the book with me at the moment, so please excuse if the answer is in there.
Years ago I used to use something that made negative scratches disappear when you printed. Made by Edwal I think.
Is there a DIY recipe for such a thing?

One of the most effective methods for making scratches disappear is nose grease. Rub both sides of the negative across the tip of your nose, this will eliminate all but the worst scratches. I never had much luck with Edwals Anti-scratch. Nose grease works better.
