Formula #47: Kodak Research Lab

Browsing through the book I stumbled upon the Kodak Research Lab formula on page 255. There it says (among other things) *Sodium hydroxide, 4.0g, however there's no footnote that corresponds to that asterisk. I'm not sure whether the asterisk shouldn't be there in the first place or a footnote is missing.

PS: It's the same in the third edition, where that formula is #43 (page 228).

OOPS! The footnote should read:

Caution: Dissolve the sodium hydroxide in a small volume of water in a separate container before adding it to the solution of the other constituents.

Just a "trick": to dissolve sodium hydroxide it is easier and faster if you place the beaker (or the container) in an ice bath. If you have to dissolve a big amount of sodium hydroxide you can even place some ice inside the beaker and adjust later to the final volume required.
