Re: dissolving phenidone
I work quite regularly with Phenidone & I've found that the fastest way is to dissolve it in drug store alcohol, the 90% type. it dissolve quite quickly with minimum fuss

Re: a different logic to stand-dev
ok, i'll run a test next week. 1 roll of film cut in half & rodinal should suffice. I'll measure the neg density with my Kodak color densitometer. Hopefully it will yield some sort of difference

a different logic to stand-dev
well, we all know stand-dev & the way people most usually do it is agitation for 30s, then stand it for whatever amount of time they desire. The reasoning is that if there is no agitation then the chemical exchange happens mostly via diffusion & a little bit of convection due to density grad...

If I may, I would like to have these:
Omega D5 enlarger (minus the baseboard for weight reduction)
2 11x14 paper safe
4 20x24 trays
2 grain focusers
1 archival washer (hopefully 11x14 or bigger)
1 135mm lens

Alright, this might sound weird, but please bear with me, & then give me your thoughts My darkroom is build inside my small washroom. the biggest set of trays I can accommodate without tripping over myself or the tray is 12x16, 4 of them. But occasionally I envision myself doing bigger prints th...

Re: How I became a Pyro man.
i've been using Harald's formula for sometime now, in comparison with my version of Pyrocat-HD (+Vit C & some added organic restrainer). My comment is per following: - Beutler Pyro can yield extremely high-acutance, perhaps due to edge effect - It's very energetic & often stretch the midtone...

Re: Convert TF-2 to a rapid fix with the addition of ammonium chloride
you probably already tried it by now. fwiw, i just got hold of a Kodak manual & in it there's a formula for Kodak rapid fixing bath F-7 Hypo: 360gr Ammonium Chloride: 50gr Sodium Sulfite: 15gr Acetic Acid 28%: 48cc Boric Acid: 7.5gr Potass Alum: 15gr But i'd omit the alum & boric acid, assum...

beseler 45 dichroic head
i'm currently using Minolta-beseler 45A head. it's great, but i'm having difficulty doing dodging & burning with it, because it operates base on density, not time. This is a long shot posting here, but I'm looking for a beseler 45 dichroic head. please shout out if you have a spare one to let go...

Re: Pushing Ektar 100 (Help Needed)
idk if this reply is too late for the roll you mentioned. but yes, it is do-able. I often do it with the Noritsu V-50 in my lab. I'd just stop the film drive as the film is fully submerged in the CD tank for an extra 30-40s for a 2-stop push. The films often come out with non-noticable color cast. S...

This is insane! You really took it into your own hands to create things that work for you. I'm also trying to fashion a similar one out of a spolt 45A head. I'm still stuck though: I havent figured out how to wire the timer into the setup. From what i've figured out: - if the timer connects to the 1...

May I know which model it is? My friend, upon seeing the 45v-xl I've gotten from Linebarger is hugely hooked.
I myself i'm trying to make a VC head from the spare (non-working) 45A head that Linebarger gave me, but being electronically untrained i'm struggling.

Alright, so yesterday all the pieces arrived! I omitted the baseboard to cut shipping cost (to my country). So i've gotta make a new one b4 I can get this giant up & running. Several corners suffered bruises & bent, but nothing a good spanner wouldnt fix. The only sad thing is the glass neg ...

Similarities in MQ developers
Hmmm, if I were you, I'd leave them out entirely & add some metabisulfite as additional preservatives. The carbonate can be added later on as powder. the KBr or BTZ can be added as % solution as you wish. That way you add the exact amount you want, instead of having to subtract the "base&qu...

Tim, your observation is right on. & so is your MQFlex formula. Something similar should have been done before. I remember reading somewhere that Patrick Gainer (& many others) had some sort of "base" & they adjust it using carbonate (by tea-spoon) & 10% KBr (using a droppe...

Halide ions & other byproduct's effect on developer
I dont know who else to ask, so here goes: As most of us knows, halide ions are generated as developer reacts with silver halide on the film surface. & bromide, in particular, is a restrainer. As I test developer mix only using 6-7 135 frames, I start to wonder: would the film surface vs develop...

Steve, i'm gonna pick your brain here a lil: I read somewhere that fixers were acidic because when the acid was necessary for the alum hardener. Otherwise it can be omitted. I use a solution of Phenidone in ethylene alcohol, so the measuring is somewhat simplified & the error is managed. perhaps i'll try it soon. Thanks for the time provided, Simon! Regarding fix, i believe adding NH4Cl would speed up your fix, but i doubt if it'd approach the speed of true rapid fix
